The Adamson University Falcons outlasted the Letran Knights, 83-80, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup presented by Chooks-To-Go on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Falcons pulled away in the fourth quarter and fended off a last-ditch rally launched by the Knights to open their preseason campaign on a winning note.
Sean Manganti led the charge with 20 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown. Papi Sarr and Jerrick Ahanmisi added 13 and 11 markers, respectively.
Letran threatened to come back in the final minute but Sarr knocked down a crucial shot with 14 ticks left to keep Adamson on top, 82-78. Jeo Ambohot responded with a basket of his own, but it was already too late as Manganti managed to seal the win from the stripe in the next possession.
"Well it's hard when you have a lot of new guys coming in," said Adamson coach Franz Pumaren. "We're still groping for the right combination and we cannot afford to have a flat start. We're learning each game (in other tournaments). I guess that's part of the growing pains of the team."
Bong Quinto paced the Knights, who dropped to 2-2 in Group B after the loss, with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Ambohot also finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards.
Earlier, the UST Growling Tigers (1-2) notched their first victory at the expense of the still winless JRU Heavy Bombers (0-4), 98-88.
Renzo Subido topped the scoring with 24 points, to go with five assists and three rebounds. He got plenty of help as six other players finished in double-figures.
Behind Justin Gutang's 27 points, the CSB Blazers (3-0) remained undefeated, dealing the FEU Tamaraws (3-1) their first loss, 80-73.
