Blue Eagles continue unbeaten run, Maroons still on a roll

The Ateneo Blue Eagles remain in tip-top shape in the 12th Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup presented by Chooks-to-Go after they won their fifth straight game on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

As the Eagles remain perfect, the CSB Blazers on the other hand suffered their first defeat.

Here are the complete results from Monday:

Arellano def. JRU, 76-74

The Arellano Chiefs were able to do just enough to carve out a close 76-74 victory over the still winless JRU Heavy Bombers in the first game.

Guilmer Dela Torre knocked down three triples en route to 15 points to go along with four rebounds. Mauie Sera Josef and Adrian Alban meanwhile contributed a combined 25 points in Arellano's third win in six outings.

For JRU, still winless after eight games, Jed Mendoza ended up with a near triple-double of 15 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.

UP def. UE, 66-61

The UP Fighting Maroons continue to roll as they notched their fifth straight win after getting past the UE Red Warriors, 66-61. Bright Akhuetie muscled his way to 17 points and 16 rebounds as teammates Paul Desiderio and brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liaño were inactive.

"First I posted a challenge to the not-so-usual guys who get to play," said UP coach Bo Perasol.

"The challenge is for them is how are we going to play without our usual scorers. Janjan made that crucial shot."

"Janjan" is seldom-used Janjan Jaboneta, who converted on a late triple that helped shift the momentum towards the Fighting Maroons, who now tote a 5-3 record in Group A.

Rey Acuno had 14 points and seven rebounds for the now 2-4 Red Warriors.

Adamson def. CSB, 80-60

Sean Manganti put up a stellar performance of 17 points, nine rebounds, and five assists as the Adamson Falcons dealt the CSB Blazers their first loss in the preseason tournament, 80-60.

With Manganti leading the way, the Falcons outworked the Blazers on the boards with a 41-29 rebounding edge.

The Blazers, who were previously winners five straight games, were undermanned. Justin Gutang was still nursing an injury and Yankie Haruna got hurt in the third quarter. Kendrix Belgica had 18 points in the loss.

Adamson, CSB, and the FEU Tamaraws now have identical 5-1 slates in Group B.

Ateneo def. NU, 94-60

Fresh from their team-building trip in Baler, the Ateneo Blue Eagles showed no rust as they walloped the NU Bulldogs, 94-60.

"We've actually had few practices since we got back from Baler," head coach Tab Baldwin said referring to their five-day trip. "Baler does a lot for this team, their esprit de corps, and pulling them together. Getting the message through to the team that's it's really all for one for the team."

Thirdy Ravena had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Eagles who remain perfect with a 5-0 slate.

"Today, defensively we showed that we're willing to extend ourselves defensively and help one another, help each other," commended Baldwin.

With the Eagles playing tremendous defense, only Shaun Ildefonso notched double-figures for the Bulldogs with 16 points.

After the loss, NU now has a 3-4 record.
