The FEU Tamaraws squandered a 17-point lead but managed to survive an overtime thriller against the previously undefeated Adamson Soaring Falcons, 88-85, in UAAP Season 81 Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws overcame a furious endgame rally from the gutsy Falcons to move up to third place with a 4-2 record.
Adamson, meanwhile, suffered its first loss in six outings and figured in a tie for the number one spot with Ateneo.
FEU was enjoying a 17-point cushion early in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons used a 21-4 run to steal the lead, 76-75, in the final two minutes of regulation. To make matters worse for the Tamaraws, Arvin Tolentino was ejected for an unsportsmanlike foul in that stretch.
Sean Manganti's clutch baskets sparked the blistering rally that saw Adamson leading 78-77 with 41 seconds left, but Prince Orizu and Richard Escoto pushed the Tams back ahead. After consecutive misses from Jerom Lastimosa and Manganti, Simon Camacho nailed a last-second shot that forced an extra session.
FEU was holding to a slim 86-85 edge in the dying seconds of overtime when the Falcons almost forced a turnover that would have given them a chance to overtake. Papi Sarr, however, threw the ball away which allowed Barkley Eboña to break away for a layup.
Adamson had multiple opportunities in the last 20 seconds, but Manganti and Jerrick Ahanmisi badly missed their 3-point attempts that led to a shotclock violation.
Despite getting thrown out, Tolentino still topped with 19 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Tamaraws. Hubert Cani contributed 14 points and three boards, while Wendell Comboy delivered 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.
For the Falcons, Ahanmisi and Manganti finished with 21 and 20 points respectively, while Sarr (15-14) and Camacho (10-11) had double-double outings.
