While the current team prepares to play Iran, the other Gilas Pilipinas players and coaches got together and raised funds for charity. As part of their continuous effort to help fellow countrymen, Gilas made a recent donation of P100,000 to the Alagang Kapatid Foundation Inc. (AFKI) to aid Filipinos who will be affected by the forthcoming onslaught of Typhoon Ompong.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall in northern Cagayan on Saturday morning and exit the Philippine area of responsibility the next day. Though reports say it may no longer develop into a super typhoon, Ompong could still be destructive, a reason why the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council remains on red alert.
Using the Gilas donation, the foundation is poised to provide immediate assistance to families and communities that will be affected by the typhoon. The AFKI is also set to mobilize a response team in the province of Cagayan.
"Gilas' recent donation is very significant and timely as we are all set to deploy our Foton First Responder Food Truck in the province of Cagayan within the day," Alagang Kapatid Foundation Inc. executive director Menchie Silvestre told ESPN5 on Thursday.
The Gilas program, along with its players, has been a donor of the foundation since 2013, making regular contributions that are used for various relief efforts. The players call this tradition #gilasgives.
"The Gilas team's willingness to help those in need shows their love not just for basketball, but all also for our Kapatids. Playing for our country requires mental and physical toughness, while caring for our country needs a lot of heart," added Silvestre.
"Efforts of other members of the MVP Tulong Kapatid CSR Council - PLDT Smart Foundation, Inc., Metro Pacific Investments Foundation, MAYNILAD, and Smart Communications - will further enhance and complement the work that we are currently undertaking."
Gilas is currently in Iran for their game of the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
