The Kings are champions of the Commissioner's Cup again after 21 years.
Barangay Ginebra used a strong third quarter to defeat the San Miguel Beermen in Game 6 to win the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup title, 93-77, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.
Justin Brownlee had a huge double-double of 31 points and 19 rebounds, to go along with seven assists, to lead the Kings to their second title in three conferences. Scottie Thompson also registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards, while Greg Slaughter added 13 and nine.
"It feels great. All these great people came out and supported us tonight," said Brownlee, who also won the Best Import award this conference. "(Winning a championship) never gets old. I'm happy for my team. Hopefully we can do it again next conference."
Thompson got recognition for his brilliant performance all throughout the series and was named the Finals MVP after averaging 10.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists in six games.
Both teams were neck-and-neck in the first two quarters with Ginebra trailing by three at the half, 38-35. San Miguel opened the second half with a basket from Renaldo Balkman to go up five. That's when Ginebra went berserk in the next few minutes, uncorking a 16-2 run to move into the driver's seat, 51-42, midway through the third.
June Mar Fajardo closed the gap to seven, but six straight points from Brownlee and a three-pointer from LA Tenorio put the Kings ahead by 14 points, 1:10 left in the third period. San Miguel was unable to knock down open looks and failed to play effective defense on the other end, allowing Ginebra to build a lead as high as 22 points in the fourth period.
Fajardo went on to finish with 29 points and 15 rebounds in the loss, while Balkman ended his Commissioner's Cup stint with the Beermen with 24 points and 14 boards.
