Injuries continue to pile up for Barangay Ginebra.
Japeth Aguilar, out with a right calf injury, sat out the Gin Kings' 118-124 overtime loss to Blackwater on Friday in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Aguilar said he was feeling the pain during the last two minutes of Gilas Pilipinas' game against Qatar in the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers, but really injured his right calf during Ginebra's practice on Thursday.Aguilar will be out for at least 10 days according to the team doctor.
His absence will be a huge blow for the Gin Kings who are already without Greg Slaughter (ankle), Sol Mercado (knee), and Jervy Cruz (bone spurs).
Ginebra coach Tim Cone said a rigorous schedule last conference that ended with a full-out effort to topple the San Miguel Beermen is taking its toll.
"That's the price you pay for winning the championship. We gave our all to win that championship. We came back from 1-5 deficit. The guys that should not been playing, played. And now, they're paying the price," he said. "A lot of our injuries are wear and tear injuries."
Cone remains upbeat despite the roster situation. The Gin Kings are still 3-1 in the Governors' Cup.
"We're struggling. But we're hoping we could get everybody back at the right time and make a run later on in the conference," he said.
Ginebra faces the Beermen on Sunday. San Miguel is without four-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, who is out with a shin injury.
"But we gotta turn around and focus on San Miguel on Sunday. Let's see what we can do there. We'll play with who we have," Cone said.
