San Miguel tops Phoenix in tense battle (3:06)

Tempers flare between Kevin Murphy and Calvin Abueva in the late stages of the San Miguel Beermen's 117-100 victory over the Phoenix Fuel Masters. (3:06)

The San Miguel Beermen may have rediscovered their stellar form after drubbing the Phoenix Fuel Masters 117-100 Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Beermen unleashed a 21-7 run bridging the third and fourth periods to break the game open on the way to their third win in seven games. The only blemish was a scuffle in the final minutes between Kevin Murphy and Calvin Abueva.

Phoenix drops to 6-3.

With the game safely out of reach with 4:11 remaining, Murphy and Abueva wrestled under the basket after a rebound, with Murphy holding Abueva in a headlock as the two stumbled to the baseline. Murphy was called for a flagrant foul penalty 1. The altercation sparked a commotion that resulted in Phoenix coach Louie Alas, team manager Paolo Bugia, and Doug Kramer getting technical fouls for coming onto the court.

San Miguel coach Leo Austria declined to address it after the game and instead focused on his team snapping a three-game losing streak.

"We're so thankful for this win because this is very crucial for us," said Austria. "The players had a sense of urgency. We're getting into a better position to make the playoffs. We hope we sustain this."

Christian Standhardinger led the Beermen with 29 points and 14 rebounds that went with three assists and a couple of blocks.

Marcio Lassiter and Murphy fired 26 points each, while Alex Cabagnot and Arwind Santos combined for 22 markers for the Beermen, who spoiled another stellar game from Phoenix import Eugene Phelps, who poured in 37 points and 26 rebounds.

RJ Jazul scored 16 points, Abueva chimed in 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two blocks, and Matthew Wright chipped in 11 points.
