San Miguel signed two backup players during the Christmas break to reinforce their bid in the 44th season of the PBA.
Von Pessumal was given a two-year deal, while sophomore Louie Vigil signed for another year with the Beermen whose core includes stars June Mar Fajardo, Arwind Santos, Christian Standhardinger, Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot, and Chris Ross.
During the offseason, the Beermen engaged in several trades, which landed them Terrence Romeo, Paul Zamar, and Ronald Tubid.
Nonetheless, the signing of Pessumal and Vigil was a welcome development for the team that is gunning for a fifth straight Philippine Cup title. Last year, SMB bested Magnolia in five games in the finals behind the reigning four-time MVP Fajardo.
Meanwhile, Rain or Shine also strengthened its bench after signing Ed Daquioag and Norbert Torres to new contracts.
Daquioag and Torres agreed to separate three-year deals with the Elasto Painters, who are looking to bounce back after a capping off the past season on a losing note.
Rain or Shine loaned its core to the national team competing in the Asian Games during the season-ending Governors' Cup. That squad, which was handled by former Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, finished fifth even with NBA player Jordan Clarkson leading the charge.
The Leo Awards, where the MVP and top rookie, among others, will be feted, will usher in the new PBA season on January 13 at the Philippine Arena.
