Marinerong Pilipino wins fifth straight with 84-62 drubbing of JRU

Marinerong Pilipino cruised to its fifth straight victory with an 84-62 rout of free falling Jose Rizal University on Monday in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup at JCSGO Gym in Cubao.

The Skippers got off to a strong start and never gave the Heavy Bombers an opportunity to get back in the game.

Earlier, Wangs Basketball-Letran held off Go for Gold, 91-88, to stay in contention for a playoff berth.

Bong Quinto tallied 17 points and Rey Publico added 14 in a game that featured 31 lead changes and nine deadlocks. The Couriers improved to 5-3 card.

Marinerong Pilipino went 9 of 18 from the field in the first quarter while holding JRU to 5 of 20 shooting to take a 23-11 lead that stayed the rest of the way.

Abu Tratter scored 16 points to show the way for Marinerong Pilipino. Gab Banal aand Renzo Subido tallied 11 points apiece for the Skippers, who caught up with Akari-Adamson second place on even 6-2 record.

"We haven't achieved anything yet," said Marinerong Pilipino coach Koy Banal.

"We want to be in the top two, to be in the semis outright. But the important thing here is we need to take care of ourselves and not relax. We want to be better every game."

Ervin Grospe led JRU with 16 points. The Heavy Bombers have now lost seven consecutive games and hit the cellar with a 1-7 card.
