The Philippine women's team bowed out of contention in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup after falling to the hands of Spain, 21-17, despite Janine Pontejos' hot shooting. (1:15)

BOCAUE, Bulacan - The Philippine women's team bowed out of contention in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup after suffering a 21-17 loss to 12th-seed Spain on Sunday at the Philippine Arena.

Janine Pontejos waxed hot with a game-high 13 points, five from long range, but the Filipinos still struggled to outlast their bigger and more experienced opponents.

After missing crucial two-pointers in the endgame of their previous defeat at the hands of Germany, Pontejos made sure to bounce back. Her hot shooting put the Philippines in the driver's seat at the start of the contest.

The Spanish began closing the gap and stealing the momentum by earning points from the stripe. Paula Palomares, who finished with eleven points, sunk a couple of technical freebies to lock the score at 11-all.

From there, the Spanish continued torching the home team.

Spain led by as high as six, 18-12, but Pontejos refused to give up. She almost single-handedly kept the Philippines in the game, trimming the deficit down to three, 20-17, with a long bomb.

The Pinays worked hard on defense to prevent the Spanish from clinching the win, but Palomares halted their comeback efforts with a game-winning bucket at the 3:26 mark. The Philippines remained winless after three outings, which effectively eliminated them from the tournament ahead of their final match against Hungary tonight at 7 p.m.
