Bounty Agro Ventures Inc. president Ronald Mascarinas is planning to put up a 3x3 Philippine team that will lock horns in the Tokyo Olympics two years from now.
"We need to sustain a 3x3 team in the country. We still have a chance. If we cant put our acts together, we'll be sitting down seriously with the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) on how to move forward for us to have a chance in the 2020 Olympics," he said on Thursday.
"The next order is to sit down with SBP and agree on what to do. We are serious and willing to support our campaign for us to qualify in 3x3 in the Olympics."
Aside from that, Mascarinas also bared plans to form a league committed to the new Olympic sport. To qualify for the quadrennial meet among the best of the world, the country has to organize a full-fledged 3x3 league.
Then again, nothing is set in stone yet. But Mascarinas said they are going to sit down at the soonest time possible to iron out their next move.
"There's no concrete plan right now but what's important is SBP is dead serious in forming a full time 3x3 team and organizing a sustainable 3x3 tournament nationwide," he said.
"What we learned from FIBA during the tournament, outright qualification can be done if we organize these tournaments and register them in FIBA. If we can do that, we have a chance to gain an outright qualification."
It's not going to be easy, but Gilas team manager Butch Antonio believes the plan is feasible.
"With supporters like Chooks-to-Go being at the forefront of this endeavor, it's not gonna be easy but it can be done. Nothing good comes easy after all," he said.
"With this prospect of having focus outside the 5x5, it's not gonna be easy but it can be done. We just need the support from our fellow Filipinos so our players will be inspired to take part in such events."
