Newcastle miss injury-time penalty in Cardiff draw

play
Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle: Etheridge the hero in stoppage time (2:31)

Neil Etheridge came up big for Cardiff as he denied Newcastle's Kenedy in the last minute of stoppage time to secure a point in Wales. (2:31)

Kenedy missed a 96th-minute penalty as Cardiff secured a 0-0 draw against 10-man Newcastle in their first home game back in the Premier League.

After Cardiff had enjoyed the better of the match, Newcastle appeared destined to snatch the points when Sean Morrison was adjudged to have handled in stoppage time.

But Neil Etheridge was the hero for the Bluebirds, blocking Kenedy's unconvincing spot-kick to secure a share of the spoils.

Neil Warnock's side began at a fast pace and almost took the lead after seven minutes when keeper Martin Dubravka dawdled and Kenneth Zohore closed him down, only to see the ball ricochet to safety.

Kenedy had an effort saved by Etheridge but Cardiff soon threatened again when Sol Bamba's header from a corner was scrambled clear.

An angled Ayoze Perez strike was stopped by Etheridge as the frantic pace continued, and Cardiff fashioned another chance when Harry Arter and Josh Murphy were involved in a build-up that ended when Zohore failed to find Junior Hoilett in the area.

Javier Manquillo was booked for fouling Murphy, and Newcastle could have been down to 10 men when, shortly after the half-hour, Kenedy kicked out at Victor Camarasa but referee Craig Pawson missed the offence.

Zohore headed wide as the first half entered its closing moments, and then Newcastle fashioned a chance when Jonjo Shelvey gave Perez an opportunity that Etheridge saved. Magpies manager Rafa Benitez made a change at the break, bringing on Isaac Hayden for Manquillo, but Cardiff began the second half brightly and Hoilett had a shot blocked.

Murphy, impressive on his home debut after moving from Norwich, got down the left to produce a dangerous cross that Newcastle cleared, and then Zohore steered a free header well wide.

Cardiff were on the front foot and Benitez made another change, Yoshinori Muto coming on in place of Perez after 56 minutes -- but within minutes Newcastle were down to 10 men when half-time sub Hayden was shown a straight red card for clattering into Murphy.

Murphy's twin brother Jacob came on for Newcastle as Benitez made his final switch, and Harry Arter fizzed wide for Cardiff before Warnock replaced the outstanding Murphy with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

Callum Paterson was brought on for the injured Hoilett as the minutes ticked away -- but there was still time for Newcastle to spurn their golden opportunity.
