Sven-Goran Eriksson is the Philippine Azkals' new coach.
The news broke Saturday at the AFF Suzuki Cup Trophy Tour at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. Eriksson will be in charge of the men's national football team while erstwhile coach Scott Cooper will stay on to assist him.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer's Cedelf Tupas first reported the development.
Eriksson, a Swede with loads of managerial experience on both the club and international level, agreed to a six-month contract, Tupas reported. The Azkals expect a boost in their chances at the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 with Eriksson at the helm. The veteran mentor was in charge of the England national team from 2001 to 2006, leading them to the World Cup quarterfinals in 2002 and 2006.
He last coached internationally with the Ivory Coast at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He recently had a stint with Shenzhen FC in China's second division.
It is the third coaching change for the national side this year. In June, it was announced to much fanfare that former England captain Terry Butcher would be replacing Thomas Dooley at the helm. However, Butcher suddenly resigned less than two months later without ever setting foot in the country. Cooper, who was serving as senior team adviser, took over the team during their training camp in Bahrain in September.
The Philippines is set to face Singapore, Timor Leste, Thailand and Indonesia in the group stages of the AFF Suzuki Cup in November, which will be broadcast on ESPN5.
After the Suzuki Cup, the Azkals will then prepare for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
