The Philippine Superliga (PSL) named Cignal star Rachel Ann Daquis as its newest ambassador.
This was announced during the formal opening ceremonies of the 2018 Chooks-to-Go PSL All-Filipino Conference and Collegiate Grand Slam (CGS) Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
"It's a great opportunity for me to inspire people. I want to be a role model to the youth and my co-athletes," said Daquis.
The HD Spikers team captain will replace F2 Logistics middle blocker and national team skipper Aby Maraño as the face of the league. Mika Reyes, Cha Cruz-Behag, Gretchen Ho, and Richard Gomez also served as PSL ambassadors in previous years.
Daquis, who recently completed her training as a Pilates teacher and opened her own fitness gym in Rizal, vows to fulfill her new designation despite her various commitments.
"As part of the responsibilities, I need to be a good example because I'm representing the league and my fellow players," she said. "They will look up to me as their ate (older sister), as their senior, and as their ambassador."
Daquis led Cignal in the traditional parade that takes place every start of the conference. The All-Filipino tournament occurs simultaneously with the inaugural collegiate competition, increasing the number of participating teams to a record number 14.
"Our PSL family is growing. We started with six teams in 2013, now we have 14 teams. In the coming years, maybe we'll even reach 20," said PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico.
Petron will try to defend the All-Filipino crown while battling F2 Logistics, Cignal, Generika-Ayala, Foton, Cocolife, Sta. Lucia, and Smart.
University of the Philippines, University of the East, University of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University, Colegio San Agustin-Biñan, and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, on the other hand, will vie for the first-ever CGS trophy.
