Tamaraws, Knights, Tigers turn back foes in FilOil Preseason Cup

The FEU Tamaraws barged into the win column of the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup in impressive fashion, earning an 86-78 victory over the previously undefeated Lyceum Pirates, Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

It was a balanced offensive effort for the Tamaraws which lost their first two outings in the summer tournament. Brandrey Bienes put up 14 points, anchored by a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. The trio of Wendell Comboy, Alec Stockton, and Xyrus Torres contributed 13 points apiece. Point guard L-Jay Gonzales was also a spark for his squad, providing eight points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

After the game, head coach Olsen Racela gave credit to his wards but says that they are still far from their peak.

"With regard to everyone stepping up from the bench and playing quality minutes, yes. But we don't have conditioning yet and that was why my rotation was quick," the coach said.

"We're months away from the tournament (UAAP) but we played well. This is our first win and it was against LPU."

The Tamaraws raced to a 28-13 first quarter and quelled every run that the Pirates threw at them.

Jaycee Marcelino tallied 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals for the Pirates who now settle for a 3-1 record.

The Letran Knights meanwhile came away with a thrilling 79-77 win over the EAC Generals.

Allen Mina poured 17 points, including four triples while Larry Muyang posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.

The Knights are now 4-1 while the Generals suffered their second loss in three games.

Completing the day's triple-header was an 84-73 triumph by the UST Growling Tigers over the Arellano Chiefs on the heels of a herculean effort from Mark Nonoy.

The incoming freshman posted 29 points, five rebounds, and three assists to steer the Tigers to victory.

For the Chiefs, Kent Salado put up a valiant effort of 25 points, four rebounds, and three steals in the loss.
