Looks like the UAAP can claim bragging rights over their older counterparts for the rest of 2019.

The UAAP All-Stars withstood a furious run by the NCAA All-Stars to escape with an 86-83 win in the 13th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup All-Star Game presented by Morris Garages Philippines in San Juan Friday.

JC Marcelino of Lyceum almost completed the comeback for the NCAA but missed a mid-range jumper that could have put them ahead. The UAAP squad was able to throw it to Simon Camacho for the buzzer-beating layup.

The NCAA, down four with 35 ticks to go, got it to San Beda's James Canlas' hands for the hoop and the harm that sliced the their opponents' advantage to one, 84-83.

In the ensuing play, Andrei Caracut was not able to hoist up the desperation three in time as the shot clock expired with 29.0 seconds left.

UST rookie Mark Nonoy, who played the entire fourth quarter, late after coming in from graduation, contributed eight big points in the payoff period to help the UAAP take the win.

"He's really a jitterbug. He just graduated this afternoon, but this is for the players. He played well," said UAAP All-Stars head coach Franz Pumaren.

La Salle sharpshooter Aljun Melecio also played big in the fourth quarter, hitting some big shots to keep the NCAA at bay.

Caracut of La Salle was named as the Player of the Game, scoring 12 points, including two three-pointers.

JC Marcelino meanwhile led the NCAA's scoring effort with 19 markers of his own, while San Beda's Clint Doliguez contributed 12.

It was a close affair all throughout, but the UAAP managed to build an 11-point spread, 37-28, courtesy of a layup by Jerrick Ahanmisi of Adamson, but the NCAA was able to tie the game by halftime, 45-all.

UP's Ricci Rivero and Kobe Paras were not able to suit up due to injury.

"It's a fun game. It's nice coaching an All-Star Game. You can just pick anyone else and you're sure that they're going to deliver," shared Pumaren.
