San Beda wins third straight, trounces EAC on the road

The San Beda Red Lions came into the home of the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals and showed no mercy, taking a dominant 89-72 victory Thursday in the NCAA Season 95 at the EAC Sports and Cultural Center in Paco, Manila.

James Canlas submitted a season-high 21 points, anchored by four triples while Evan Nelle had the best scoring output of his young career with 15 points alongside seven assists. Calvin Oftana put up 14 points and Donald Tankoua posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards.

Against a predominantly EAC crowd, the Red Lions were put to the test early. The Generals, who were coming a huge 84-82 upset over the Lyceum Pirates last Friday, stormed out of the gate for a 12-2 start. The defending champions settled down and ended the first quarter on a 22-4 run, including a 17-0 blast.

"They really prepared well today, started strong and they really gave us a tough game today," San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez said, commending the Generals. "[They] even beat us in rebounding, offensive rebounds. They will be a scrappier team this year and it showed today. Kudos to EAC team for the game."

The Red Lions unloaded 28 points in the third period while limiting their opponent to 16. They went on cruise control for the rest of the contest and led by as many as 28 points.

Just as Fernandez said, EAC won the rebounding battle 50-47. However, the Generals only shot 34 percent and committed 20 turnovers.

Marwin Taywan had 20 points, three rebounds, and four assists to lead EAC while Kriss Gurtiza added 15 points and eight rebounds. Jethro Mendoza, who scored 21 points versus Lyceum including the game-winner, struggled with 10 points on 4-for-17 shooting.

"I'm happy we got this win in preparation for our next game, tough game for us," Fernandez said, as San Beda faces the San Sebastian Stags. "Hopefully what we saw tonight, we can learn and check on the things we can check versus San Sebastian."

The defending champions rose to a 3-0 record in Season 95 while the Generals settled for a 1-2 card. San Beda is now also 21-0 all-time against Emilio Aguinaldo.
