The UST Growling Tigers unleashed mayhem to overpower the UP Fighting Maroons, 85-69, and notch their second straight win in the UAAP Season 82 Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
UST guards Mark Nonoy and Renzo Subido delivered the biggest shots as they closed out the game with an 11-0 run.
Nonoy hit an up-and-under layup before knocking down a 3-point shot that made it a ten-point lead in the last two minutes. Subido followed up with back-to-back triples that served as the final blow in the contest.
Five Growling Tigers finished in double-digits, led by Soulemane Chabi Yo who had a double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. Nonoy posted 16 points and five rebounds, while Subido added 13 points and three assists. Rhenz Abado and Dave Ando combined for 22 points.
UST stayed unbeaten and grabbed an early lead with a 2-0 record, while UP dropped to 1-1 in the standings.
"I'm not thinking of this as a statement win. While UP is very talented on paper, we know that we can prepare for every team," Tigers coach Aldin Ayo said post-match.
After being down by as many as 14 points, the Fighting Maroons bridged the second and third quarters with a blistering run that forced a 46-all deadlock. Chabi Yo, however, sparked the counter-run that put UST back in control.
Nonoy, a rookie from Negros Occidental, displayed his speed and ability to score in a variety of ways as he helped push the Tigers' lead back up to double-digits. He bounced back from his forgettable 3-point output in his debut against UE last Wednesday.
"In the first game, the rookie jitters were still there," said Nonoy. "I wasn't able to contribute but we still won. This game, I was able to adjust and coach told me to just bounce back and follow the system to help our team."
UST shot 46.6 percent from the field and had a 43-12 advantage in perimeter points. Last year's MVP Bright Akhuetie paced the Fighting Maroons in the loss with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Javi Gomez de Liaño and Jaydee Tungcab contributed 15 and 11 points, respectively.
