Xyrus Torres lit up the scoreboards as he rained down five threes as the FEU Tamaraws fashioned out an 83-71 win against the Adamson Soaring Falcons in UAAP Season 82 action at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The homegrown rookie also notched a career-high 21 points as FEU forced a draw against their opponents, which now both sport a 3-4 slate at the end of the first round.
FEU was able to erect a 14-point advantage in the first half, which eventually was trimmed down to just five, 55-50, after a three-point play by Fil-Peruvian guard Valandre Chauca at the 1:42 mark of the third quarter.
However, FEU made a furious response by going on a 13-2 spurt, highlighted by Torres' back-to-back long bombs and L-Jay Gonzales' pullup jumper, pushing their lead to its biggest, 68-52, at the conclusion of the period.
In the final canto, the Tamaraws kept their opponents at bay, not letting their lead to go lower than nine, 74-65, after a corner triple by Jerrick Ahanmisi.
Foreign student-athlete Pat Tchuente finally ended his two-game slump by forcing his way on the interior, ending up with a stellar 21-point, 19-rebound, and six-block performance, all career bests. He laid an egg in his two previous outings.
Chauca top scored for Adamson with 13 points. Ahamisi chipped in 12, while Lenda Douanga tallied 11 points and 16 rebounds.
"All we wanted was win our last game in the first round," said FEU consultant Nash Racela. "The players delivered."
