UST to conduct internal investigation on alleged quarantine violations

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) confirmed Sunday that it has created a committee to investigate the alleged quarantine violations by the UST Growling Tigers in Sorsogon.

"Today, we heard the news about the alleged breach of quarantine protocols by the UST Basketball Team in Sorsogon. Accordingly, we created a committee to investigate and to inquire into the matter," UST said in a statement.

UST also echoed the sentiment of the group that government-mandated protocol must be followed at all times.

"While we adhere to the belief that physical activity can have a profoundly positive impact on the students' physical and mental health, we believe that the undertaking should be done in compliance with the guidelines issued by the government," it added. "We always endeavor to support the concerted government effort to ensure that proper social physical environments are in place."

The university assured that they will not be condoning any breach of quarantine rules.

"We wish you that the University does not tolerate any form of violation of government regulation, and it responds promptly by taking the appropriate action," the statement closed.

A body composed of the Philippine Sports Commission, Dept. of Health, and the Games and Amusements Board opened an inquiry with the UAAP on Saturday. The group said that it will be letting UST conduct its own investigation before making any conclusions.

"The PSC, recognizes the UAAP as the mother organization of the concerned team and trusts that proper actions shall be done on this matter," said the agency.

According to the joint administrative order released by the DOH, PSC, and GAB last July, recreational and non-professional contact sports and activities "shall be temporarily suspended until an effective vaccine and/or appropriate standard of care for COVID-19 cases is developed."

When earlier asked if the team participated in a "bubble", CJ Cansino left it up to UST to address speculations.

"Humihingi ako ng sorry sa mga tao na humihingi ng sagot na yun, dahil ayoko na magsalita. Respeto na lang sa UST at sa mga dating teammate ko, dahil kung alam kung sa akin manggaling yun alam kong masisira yung team, alam kong mangyayari sa UST. Sila na bahala na mag-confirm noon," he said.
