Former UP Fighting Maroons center Kevin Astorga arrested in drug bust

Former UP Fighting Maroon Kevin Astorga was arrested by authorities early Tuesday morning in a buy-bust sting after allegedly possessing high-grade marijuana and cocaine in ParaƱaque City.

Astorga played center for the Maroons from 2008-10 under Aboy Castro and was part of the national youth team that won the 2004 SEABA U-18 Championship held in Lucena, Quezon.

According to a report from the Southern Police District, operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-RO-NCR Southern District Office, together with officers of the Philippine National Police conducted the operation, which resulted in the dismantling of an alleged drug den operated by one of the suspects.

The 34-year-old and four others, were allegedly found to be in possession of more or less 150 grams of a suspected substance more commonly known as kush, with a total value of P168,000, according to the police report.

Along with the kush were various small transparent self-sealing sachets with traces of suspected cocaine and various drug paraphernalia. In addition, two cellphones were also recovered from the suspects, and P150,000 worth of marked money paid by the operatives, who were posing as buyers.

Also apprehended were Jericho Tomagan, Karen Salbahan, Mico Mojares, and DX Montejo. The five were celebrating Astorga's birthday.

Authorities will file numerous charges against the five for alleged violations of Sections 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13,14 and possibly 15 of Art. II of RA 9165, more commonly known as the Dangerous Drugs Act.
