UPIS standout Jordi Gomez de Liaño 'excited' to play for UST

Jordi Gomez de Liaño averaged 13 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists for UPIS in UAAP Season 82. UAAP

Unlike older brothers Javi and Juan, Jordi Gomez de Liaño will tread a different path for his collegiate career.

After three seasons filled with potential playing for UP Integrated School, Jordi confirmed to ESPN5.com that he has committed to the UST Growling Tigers.

"I'm extremely excited to play for UST! To play with their great coaching staff and teammates, it's an honor for me to be a part of the team," he said in a message.

The fourth Gomez de Liaño is a 6-foot-5 wing who averaged 13 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in the UAAP Season 82 boys' basketball tournament where the Jr. Maroons wallowed at the bottom of the standings at 1-13. He will be immediately eligible for UST whenever the men's basketball tournament resumes.

Jordi thanked the UP community for his six years with the school.

"I want to thank UP for the wonderful 6 years of high school. I want to shout out coach Paolo (Mendoza) and all the coaching staff and teammates who made me the player I am today. Thank you for everything! Still, UP Fight!"

The Growling Tigers beat out Jordi's erstwhile alma mater UP as well as College of St. Benilde, according to sources.

Jordi is actually the second Gomez de Liaño sibling in Espana as eldest brother Joe had spent two years in UST's Team B before going back to State U.

Under interim head coach Jinno Manansala, Gomez de Liaño will be joining a retooled roster that was hit heavily by player defections last year. The remaining holdovers are led by UAAP 82 MVP Soulemane Chabi Yo and Sherwin Concepcion, vital cogs from the team that reached the Season 82 men's basketball Finals.
