The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced on Tuesday that CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa, Alvin Pasaol and Joshua Munzon will represent the country in the upcoming FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in India.
The Philippines is one of the 20 teams participating in the OQT, which will be held from March 18 to 22 in Bengaluru. The top three teams of the tournament will be the first participants of the inaugural staging of the 3x3 competition in the Tokyo Olympics later this year.
The four were chosen by a selection committee chaired by Sonny Barrios, with coaches Jong Uichico, Pat Aquino, Eric Altamirano, and Ronnie Magsanoc as its members.
Munzon and Pasaol are the country's top two 3x3 players, while Tautuaa and Perez were part of the team that won a gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games. Leonard Santillan and Karl Dehesa, who are both in the top 10 Philippine 3x3 rankings, were chosen as reserves.
The SBP said Serbian coach Stefan Stojajic and conditioning coach Darko Krsman will oversee the day-to-day training program of the team.
"It is an honor for the Philippines to be with the top 20 countries vying for seats at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics," SBP said in a statement on Tuesday. "We ask our countrymen to rally behind our Team in its quest to be part of the Olympiad."
The Philippines is in Group C together with Slovenia, Qatar, France and Dominican Republic. The top two teams of each group will move on to the quarterfinals.
