Phoenix eyes a potential win against a struggling SMB squad

Phelps: SMB ordinary without Fajardo (1:48)

Phoenix Fuel Masters' import Eugene Phelps said the struggling San Miguel Beermen are just an ordinary team without June Mar Fajardo. (1:48)

The revitalized Phoenix Fuel Masters head into Friday's crucial Governors' Cup matchup with the listless San Miguel Beermen at the Mall of Asia Arena with all the momentum.

Phoenix, fresh from a 26-point rout of NLEX, is tied for fourth at 6-2 with the idle Blackwater Elite.

The Fuel Masters can solidify their hold on a top 4 bid in the playoffs with a win against the struggling Beermen (2-4) at 7 p.m.

Phoenix import Eugene Phelps, who posted 51 points and 20 rebounds in the team's 123-97 demolition of NLEX, isn't impressed by the Beermen.

"Without June Mar [Fajardo] they're a regular team," Phelps said. "If we stay together and stay focused, we'll be fine."

Murphy, who replaced the injured Arizona Reid over two weeks ago.

San Miguel dropped a close game, 109-108, to Magnolia September 30 before falling short to Alaska, 127-119.

Murphy, the former Utah Jazz, averaged 41 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists, while shooting 54 percent from the floor in his first two games for the Beermen.

Fil-German rookie Christian Standhardinger, along with veterans Alex Cabagnot, Arwind Santos and Chris Ross are expected to provide the needed support for Murphy.
