Elasto Painters take Game 2 behind stellar play on defense, 3-point shooting

What Magnolia needs to do to stave off elimination (2:51)

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters cruised past Magnolia 93-80 for a 2-0 lead. (2:51)

Norbert Torres was the unlikely offensive threat for Rain or Shine in the early going of Game 2 of the PBA Philippine semifinals on Sunday.

He scored 13 of the team's 19 points in the opening period and had 16 by halftime, making 4-of-4 from the 3-point line in a little more than 11 minutes on the court.

His teammates followed his lead and the Elasto Painters easily disposed of Magnolia, 93-80, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Rain or Shine knocked down 16 3-pointers, one from James Yap, that gave the Elasto Painters an 82-59 lead with 9:34 remaining in the fourth period.

Javee Mocon scored on a layup a minute later as Rain or Shine established its biggest lead, 25 points, in the game. That's when the team's shock troopers checked into the game to put the finishing touches to the victory.

While Torres instigated the offensive onslaught, it was Ed Daquioag who took charge the rest of the match, finishing with a game-high 19 points built on 3 triples to go with 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Rey Nambatac and Gabe Norwood chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

For Daquioag, though, it was the team's defense that really kept the Elasto Painters going.

"Everything started with our defense," he said after the game. "Our confidence came from our defense. We really played good defense tonight."

Magnolia, meanwhile, struggled from beyond the arc, making only 7-of-25 for 28 percent.

Even the team's best perimeter shooter in Paul Lee shot bricks from the rainbow country. Lee shot only one 3-pointer and wound up with 12 points.
