Jones waxes hot as KaTropa move to top spot

TNT claims top spot (1:46)

The TNT KaTropa fashioned out a 104-91 triumph over the Meralco Bolts to claim the top spot in the team standings of the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup with a 6-1 win-loss record. (1:46)

Terrence Jones waxed hot as the TNT KaTropa repulsed the Meralco Bolts, 104-91, in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Jones did everything with ease, exploding for 49 points as TNT KaTropa nabbed the top spot with a 6-1 win-loss tally.

It was the fourth 40-point game for the former Houston Rocket, who also had 18 rebounds and four assists.

"Just the trust of my teammates makes me want to be aggressive, it makes me want to perform for my team," Jones said after the match.

But Jones didn't do it alone. TNT actually leaned on its marksmanship as the KaTropa sizzled for 16 three-pointers.

Jones shot 7-of-11 from beyond the arc. Ryan Reyes added six triples and Don Trollano had three. Meralco's shooting, meanwhile, was woeful as the Bolts made only five of 25 attempts from that range.

Reyes, in fact, scored on a four-point play that capped a scintillating 13-0 run for the KaTropa with 2:36 remaining in the third period, 76-61.

Meralco was able to find some spark after that, closing in on the KaTropa before Jones took charge anew.

The win spoiled the debut of new Meralco import Jimmie Taylor as well as Chris Newsome's breakout game.

Taylor, who replaced Gani Lawal, had 13 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Newsome regained his touch and finished with a team-high 32 points to go with three rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

The Bolts absorbed their second straight loss for a 3-4 card.
