San Miguel bucks Wells' absence, holds off Blackwater in OT

Fajardo erupts for 30 points to lift Beermen (1:29)

San Miguel snapped a two-game losing streak as June Mar Fajardo poured in 30 points and 13 rebounds to top Blackwater Elite 99-96 in overtime. (1:29)

The San Miguel Beermen didn't need an import to take a 99-96 win in overtime over Blackwater Elite at the Cuneta Astrodome.

With Dez Wells out with an ankle injury he suffered last October 27 against Meralco, the local players stepped up to help the Beermen improve to 6-3 in the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup.

June Mar Fajardo towed the Beermen to the victory with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Terrence Romeo fired 20 points, while Arwind Santos chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

San Miguel coach Leo Austria said Wells looked fine when the team convened on Monday. The day after, though, was different.

"We were hoping he could make it to this game, but we don't want to force anybody to play if they feel something wrong with their body. And that's the way it is with our team. We're not forcing anyone," Austria said.

Austria is just glad the Beermen are back on winning track after dropping the last two games, the last was a blowout loss to Meralco Bolts.

"It's a nice bounce back win for us. We really needed this win because we still have a chance to get a top four," he said.

Down by nine in the last 2:23 of regulation, the Elite fought their way back after KG Canaleta and Mac Belo combined for three triples to tie the game and send the game into overtime.

Things went downhill for the Elite in the extra period, though, after import Marqus Blakely fouled out with still 3:18 remaining. San Miguel scored eight straight points after that and the Elite failed to recover.

The Elite slid to a league-worst 2-8 record and bowed out of contention.
