Nambatac leads way as Rain or Shine holds off Meralco

Rain or Shine came back from an 11-point hole to come away with an 83-81 win over Meralco in the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.

Rey Nambatac hit some clutch baskets, but his steal on Bong Quinto proved to be the difference as the Elasto Painters improved to a 4-7 win-loss record. Nambatac scored seven of his 24 points in the fourth period. Richard Ross sizzled with 26 points to go with 12 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Despite the win, the Elasto Painters won't make the playoffs.

Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia weaved a sigh of relief after his team overhauled the double-digit deficit to take the much-needed win.

"We just needed this win to survive. Whatever happens. We showed heart today," said Garcia after the match.

Meralco import Allen Durham had seven seconds to send the game into overtime.

After blocking Ross, Durham sped to the other end of the court only to lob the ball to Raymond Almazan, who didn't expect the pass. Almazan muffed the shot and the Bolts absorbed its first loss after a scintillating five-game winning streak.

At 8-3, Meralco is still assured of a twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals.

Durham finished with 23 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Almazan had 19 points and 18 rebounds.

Baser Amer, who played a few minutes in Meralco's win against NorthPort as he was still recovering from injury, looked fully healthy and unloaded 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the 3-point area.
