Cone: Slaughter's absence would be 'a big blow' to Ginebra

Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone revealed that he and Greg Slaughter talked about the big man's plan to take time away from basketball after winning the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup title.

"Contrary to some reports, I did know Greg was contemplating taking a break from basketball," Cone said in a text message.

Slaughter made a surprise announcement Sunday, when he bared his intention through an Instagram post to take a leave from basketball after his contract with Ginebra lapsed.

"With that, now that my contract has expired, I've decided to take a break to be able to work on myself in all aspects," Slaughter wrote. "I may not know what the future holds, but one thing is for sure, the best is yet to come!"

Slaughter's decision could impact the Gin Kings' goal of winning the Philippine Cup, where the team hasn't won since the 2006-07 staging of the conference.

"Obviously, his absence in the All-Filipino would be a big blow to the team and his teammates," Cone said.

Cone, however, said he's looking to have a conversation with Slaughter soon.

"We discussed it during our exit meeting immediately following the championship, and I hope to discuss it further in the next couple of days," he said.
