Holding Terrific 12 remains a possibility, says East Asia Super League CEO

East Asia Super League chief executive officer Matt Beyer said holding the 2020 EASL Terrific 12 remains a possibility despite the fact that COVID-19 has infected millions of people worldwide.

The regional tournament is originally scheduled on Sept. 15-20 in Macau.

"The COVID situation has unfortunately affected most live sports, including The Terrific 12 this September," Beyer told ESPN5.com.

But the Hong Kong-based American executive remains hopeful.

"Yes, anything is possible, but all decisions (should cancellation be done) will be made in consultation with all parties based on the COVID situation, and the travel and health situation," explained Beyer. "The best thing is to do what we can in 2020, and go into 2021 with strength."

For the moment, the EASL's efforts are directed on preparing for the home-and-away league. The launching of the home-and-away league is slated sometime in October 2021.

"We're still in negotiations with relevant leagues, but there will be pro teams from the regions of Greater China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines," bared Beyer, who added that the home-and-away league already gained recognition from FIBA.

In the 2019 edition, then four-time Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer, along with TNT and Blackwater joined the Terrific 12. The Dez Wells-reinforced Beermen finished fourth, while the KaTropa and the Elite bombed out early in the tournament.

The Liaoning Flying Leopards, reinforced by former LA Lakers guard Lance Stephenson reigned supreme in the 2019 Terrific 12.
