Gilas Pilipinas prospect Sage Tolentino has officially received a scholarship offer from NCAA Division I powerhouse Kansas University, he announced Friday.
"Blessed to receive an offer from Kansas. Thanks to Coach (Bill) Self and Coach (Kurtis) Townsend for believing in me. All glory to God! #jayhawks #dreams #blessed," he wrote on his Instagram account.
Kansas, playing in the Big 12 conference, has won three national championships and was ranked no. 1 on ESPN's men's college basketball leaderboard before the 2019-20 season prematurely ended.
The 7-foot-1 center was also reportedly on the radar of University of Kentucky and has been in "consistent contact" with the school's officials, Kentucky Sports Radio's Jack Pilgrim tweeted about two weeks ago.
Tolentino, 16, figures to be an attractive recruit for NCAA schools after helping lead the Maryknoll Spartans in Hawaii to back-to-back Division I titles in the HHSSA.
In an interview with KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello, Tolentino expressed his gratitude and said the offer was "unexpected," but also clarified that he's not going to rush to any decisions just yet.
"I'm just so blessed. I'm thankful for this opportunity that another college gave me an offer. I'm very excited and proud," he said.
"It's motivation just to work harder... knowing that they're division champions and stuff makes me more motivated to go to college and work harder," he added. "No commitment, no pressure. Just live my life and just keep working hard on academics and school and just work hard for my dream to make the NBA."
Former Jayhawks currently in the NBA include Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins, the Morris twins Marcus and Markieff, Josh Jackson, and Kelly Oubre, Jr.
