2020 Melbourne Cup Field Complete Guide

It is the first Tuesday in November which means it is time to run the Melbourne Cup around the 3200 metres at Flemington.

We have all the details you need to pick a winner in the big one.

TAB Odds: $10 Form: 21x 1. Anthony Van Dyck (IRE) Covered more ground (11m more) than Verry Elleegant in the Caulfield Cup and just missed, and that was on a soft track, he is better suited drier. Has beaten arguably the world's best stayer Stradivarius, twice at 2400m. Hi first attempt at 3200m but is world-class and drawn nicely in barrier three. Huge chance.

TAB Odds: $51 Form: 626 2. Avilius (GB) - Looked a winning hope in Caulfield Cup when ran out of luck at a vital stage. Was poleaxed in this race in 2018 so forget that. Verry Elleegant is 5-zip over him so far in 2020. Probably needed a wet track to have any real hope.

TAB Odds: $41 Form: 009 3. Vow and Declare - Last year's winner who was below his best in the Caulfield Cup when back near Anthony Van Dyke (who ran 2nd) but failed to run on. Was ridden forward on a modest tempo when winning this last year. Stays very well. Up in the weights this year and needs to lift on his recent runs.

TAB Odds: $21 Form: 122 4. Master of Reality (IRE) - So brave in this race last year when up on modest tempo and didn't have much luck in a close fourth placing. Goes up only 0.5kg. Arrives back in Australia off the back of a dominant Listed win beating Barbados who then ran 4th in G1 Irish St Leger. Should be right in the mix if he can repeat last year's effort.

TAB Odds: $12 Form: 1x2 5. Sir Dragonet (IRE) - Heavily backed to win the Cox Plate at his Australian debut, beating Russian Camelot fair and square. All his wins have been on wet ground but he is hardly inept dry. Has won to 2505m and ran really well at 2900m. Can he win a strong 3200m on dry ground? Very hard to beat if he does.

TAB Odds: $26 Form: 311 6. Twilight Payment (IRE) - Ran 11th in last year's Cup, but was unsuited by the slow speed and only beaten 3.8 lengths. Has since thrashed Master Of Reality by 8 lengths and solid third in G1 St Leger last start. Only up .5kg this year. Rough chance.

TAB Odds: $11 Form: 114 7. Verry Elleegent - The mighty mare is the reigning Caulfield Cup winner beating world-class Anthony Van Dyck. That was her fifth G1 win. Only penalised 0.5kg. Unproven over 3200m but has always looked a genuine stayer. Arguably Australia's best horse! Would've been favourite had it rained, but still a major player.

TAB Odds: $71 Form: 890 8. Mustajeer (GB) - Sat back with those who ran the quinella in the Caulfield Cup and ran home well (5th-fastest last 200m) but was no match for those two, who are both here again. Ran well in the 2019 Caulfield Cup. Place looks best.

TAB Odds: $41 Form: x27 9. Stratum Albion (GB) - International having first Australian start. Ran on well into 2nd in G2 Lonsdale Stks chasing 15/8F Enbihaar who is now 6 wins from 10 starts. Has won to 3621m and stays all day! Has he got the class? Place claims.

TAB Odds: $61 Form: 041 10. Dashing Willoughby (GB) - Dropped out badly in Caulfield Cup at his Aussie debut. Was G3 winner in July beating 2018 Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter so if he runs to that, he is in the game for sure. But he has to lift on that Caulfield Cup run. Take on trust.

TAB Odds: $17 Form: 533 11. Finche (GB) - One of two runners (Verry Elleegant the other) for champion trainer Chris Waller. Ran wide with no cover from long way out in Caulfield Cup and was excellent. Had his chances and finsihed close up in this race last year when not beaten far. Can he find another length or two? In the mix.

TAB Odds: $10 Form: 43x 12. Prince of Arran (GB) - International who thrives over here with his worst career run in Australia a fourth place. That was last start in Caulfield Cup when charged home (race-fastest last 200m). Beat all-bar Vow And Declare this race last year and meets him 4.5kg better. Huge chance.

TAB Odds: $8 Form: 92x 13. Surprise Baby (NZ) - The best "story" of the race as a Wimmera horse taking on the world raiders. Well back and in traffic before finding the line very nicely in Turnbull last start. Arguably best run in the race in this last year from back/wide off a slow tempo. Looks right on target to run enormous again.

LATE SCRATCHING: 14. King of Leogrance

TAB Odds: $13 Form: 321 15. Russian Camelot (IRE) - Potential superstar and another Danny O'Brien runner. Worked up near strong speed in Cox Plate and fought hard when Sir Dragonet went to him. Drops to 53.5kg as Northern Hemisphere 3YO. First go at the trip but doubt that any issue on the strength of his powerhouse SA Derby win. Tricky draw, but serious player.

TAB Odds: $41 Form: 133 16. Steel Prince (IRE) - Ran wide, was worked and ran a terrific third in Bart Cummings here, then tough effort to win Geelong Cup. Over-raced off slow speed this race last year and ran very well. Better horse this year, but placed preferred in a strong Cup.

TAB Odds: $26 Form: 378 17. The Chosen One (NZ) - Kiwi who had his chance in Caulfield Cup but beat many key rivals home. Had no hope in this race last year off that slow tempo. Good second to Etah James in Sydney Cup at 3200m. Not the worst.

TAB Odds: $26 Form: 142 18. Ashrun (FR) - International who burst his way into the Cup with a narrow but impressive Hotham win here on Saturday. Up in class, but down sharply in weight. Looks a real stayer. Big factor is whether he handles the quick, three-day back-up.

TAB Odds: $51 Form: 067 19. Warning - Flew home in Turnbull here when looking desperate for 2400m. Ran on quite well late in Caulfield Cup but others were stronger. Gets back to Flemington which is a big tick. VRC Derby winner last Spring here. Looks the best roughie in the field.

TAB Odds: $71 Form: 40x 20. Etah James (NZ) - Sydney Cup winner who stays well. Came with Shared Ambition in MV Cup last time but was just no match, that form ties in through Steel Prince et al. Likely fitter for that so not worst here. Place claims.

TAB Odds: $7 Form: 1x2 21. Tiger Moth (IRE) - Buzz international having first Australian start. He's a Northern Hemisphere 3YO here off a dominant win in G3 at just start four. Second to Saviatano prior and that horse was then third to the mighty Stradivarius in G1 Goodwood Cup. Oozes potential and should be right in the finish.

TAB Odds: $71 Form: 300 22. Oceanex (NZ) - Worked early in Moonee Valley Cup and stuck on very well in race dominated by run-ons. That was her first career defeat in races beyond 2000m. Ramsden winner here at 2800m with 56kg. Query in this class, but stays well. Place claims.

TAB Odds: $34 Form: 166 23. Miami Bound (NZ) - 2019 VRC Oaks winner here who bounced back to form with a very strong win in MV Cup on soft ground, running by Shared Ambition who had run well prior with key rivals here in Persan and Steel Prince. The latter then won Geelong Cup. Find this harder, but not the worst.

TAB Odds: $31 Form: 121 24. Persan - Never runs poorly! Had gun run in Bart Cummings with 55kg beating subsequent Geelong Cup winner Steel Prince and that horse also ran well in this race in 2019. It's remarkable how far he's come in the past six months and deserves his crack at the race. Stays so well, could give some cheek.
