Rangers notes: Griffin a near lock to make rotation

A triple's worth of Texas Rangers notes as the team nears the opening of the 2016 season, courtesy of Rotowire:

  • Nick Martinez was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock, all but ensuring A.J. Griffin will begin the year in the Texas rotation. Martinez figures to be a rotation option should injuries hit the major-league staff, but his pedestrian peripherals throughout his major-league career (154 K, 101 walks in 265.1 IP) don't bode well for any long-term success.

  • Griffin hasn't been told he'll begin the year in the Texas rotation, though it's widely expected that he will following the demotion of Martinez according to T.R Sullivan of MLB.com. Griffin pitched poorly Tuesday following Martinez's demotion, allowing seven hits and five runs in 3.2 innings but did manage to fan six.

  • Luke Jackson (back) could appears in a minor-league game later this week, MLB.com's T.R Sullivan reports. Jackson is expected to begin the year at Triple-A Round Rock, pitching out of the bullpen, once healthy.
