Bucs LT Donovan Smith, CB Vernon Hargreaves miss practice

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were back practicing in pads Saturday after Thursday night's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, and several players were missing in action, including starting left tackle Donovan Smith and first-round draft pick Vernon Hargreaves III.

"Donovan has the flu so he's home in bed. ... that's where he was," head coach Dirk Koetter said after practice. "As we said yesterday, we've got some guys that are a little banged up. Saturday practice ... players have tomorrow off. I would expect that we'll be in pretty good shape on Monday. But that's gonna happen when you have a little live football."

Koetter also pointed out that the team got back at 2:30 in the morning and it was the first live action players have had in months, so it was a tapered-down practice and they'll be full-go for the new week starting Monday.

Hargreaves didn't participate and was on the sideline in a bucket cap. At one point, he was tossing the ball back and forth with assistant strength and conditioning coach Joe Vaughn, but he didn't do much else. He had a quarterback hurry and a pass breakup in Thursday's game. Neither Hargreaves nor Koetter would specify what the injury was, but Hargreaves said that it "wasn't anything serious" and he hopes to be back practicing Monday

Veteran tight end Brandon Myers, who left Thursday's game with a knee injury, also did not practice, nor did running back Charles Sims, who missed Thursday's game after tweaking his ankle during Monday's practice at Tropicana Field.

Veteran guard J.R. Sweezy is still not practicing. He suffered a back injury and underwent an undisclosed surgical procedure this offseason. He flew out to California this past week to have it examined by a specialist.

With Smith out, Kevin Pamphile, who has been lining up in Sweezy's left guard position all through camp, was working with the first-team defense at left tackle. Center Evan Smith was lining up at left guard in Pamphile/Sweezy's spot.

Defensive end William Gholston was not at practice and did not play in Thursday's game due to a family-related illness. He is expected to rejoin the team Monday, according to Koetter.

Rookie safety Elijah Shumate, who was activated from the non-football injury list last week after suffering a wrist injury and did play Thursday, did not practice. Rookie linebacker Cassanova McKinzy continues to be sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Late in practice, rookie running back Russell Hansbrough was involved in a collision in the corner of the end zone and was receiving attention from the entire training staff for an undisclosed injury.
