Dick Vitale's top 10 for next season

With Virginia firmly in the record books as 2019 national champions, it is time for the VBDI (Vitale Bald Dome Index) to look into the future.

It is very difficult to pick next year's top teams. A number of stars have already declared for the NBA draft and will likely stay in the pool. There are the grad transfer rules that clearly change everything. Kentucky already landed a prize transfer in Nate Sestina, formerly of Bucknell.

There are several name recruits and jucos who remain undecided.

So while it is a challenge, I have come up with my own, ridiculously early top 10. Obviously this is subject to change.

My first crack at the 2019-2020 Top 10:

1. Michigan State Spartans
The potential is great if Cassius Winston, Nick Ward and Aaron Henry all return. If Joshua Langford is healthy, Tom Izzo has a great shot at his ninth Final Four.

2. Kentucky Wildcats
John Calipari got some good news when Ashton Hagans decided to return to Lexington. Now if he get Tyler Herro to return to Big Blue Nation. It will not be easy to replace PJ Washington and Keldon Johnson, though he has a pair of top 15 recruits in Kahlil Whitney and Tyrese Maxey.

3. Virginia Cavaliers
Tony Bennett is basking in the glory of the championship, but he would like to be the first back-to-back winner since Billy Donovan and Florida in 2006 and 2007. Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome are expected back. If De'Andre Hunter spurns the NBA draft, watch out.

4. Duke Blue Devils
RJ Barrett is gone and Zion Williamson should be too. Coach K will reload, led by Vernon Carey Jr. The return of Tre Jones is a major plus as a defensive dynamo and floor general.

5. Gonzaga Bulldogs
Mark Few has a top-notch class coming in. Veterans Zach Norvell Jr., Killian Tillie and Corey Kispert could all be back. Few is a sure Hall of Famer in my eyes. I suspect he will land a transfer or two in the off-season to bolster the squad.

6. Michigan Wolverines
John Beilein has had an amazing run in recent years. The loss of Iggy Brazdeikis is a blow. Zavier Simpson and Isaiah Livers are expected to do even more.

7. Marquette Golden Eagles
The key here is the return of Markus Howard, to go along with Joey and Sam Houser. Steve Wojciechowski could have a special team.

8. Maryland Terrapins
If Anthony Cowan Jr. comes back, watch this team push in the Big Ten. Mark Turgeon had a young team last season and the year of experience will make a difference.

9. Louisville Cardinals
Chris Mack is losing Jordan Nwora and Steven Enoch as of now. Can V.J. King step up? Ryan McMahon is also expected back and the recruiting class is one of the nation's best.

10. Villanova Wildcats
While Phil Booth and Eric Paschall are gone, the cupboard is not bare. Collin Gillespie, Jermaine Samuels, Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree and Saddiq Bey are returning. Jay Wright has a great class, led by 6-5 Bryan Antoine, coming in. Wright should be in the Hall too!

There you have it, an early look ahead, baby!
