Borussia Dortmund spoiled former United States boss Jurgen Klinsmann's debut as Hertha Berlin coach with a 2-1 win in the German capital.

Dortmund gave their embattled coach Lucien Favre some respite at Hertha, despite having to play the second half with 10 men after the dismissal of Mats Hummels for a second booking on the stroke of half-time.

They were 2-1 ahead at the time after striking twice in two minutes in the first half with Jadon Sancho slotting home in the 16th minute and Thorgan Hazard grabbing their second soon after.

Favre said after the match: "We wanted to win here no matter what. And, in the end, we did that. It was a very difficult match. We had a very good start, played attacking football with dream combinations.

"Led 2-0, could have scored a third after a set piece. And we concede an unlucky goal and then the red card for Mats Hummels and that was very, very difficult."

Hertha, with new coach Klinsmann on the bench, pulled one back through Vladimir Darida's deflected effort in the 34th minute, but despite a frantic final 20 minutes, they could not find an equaliser.

"Of course, we hoped for a bit more," Klinsmann said. "We thought we scored the 2-2. We looked at it again now, and you can indeed argue about this.

"If the 2-2 is not disallowed, it would have gone the other direction. Basically, after the early shock of the two goals we fought ourselves back into the match. The team was willing to show a good performance."

Dortmund, who earned their first win in three league games, climbed to fifth on 23 points.

Klinsmann, meanwhile, has now seen firsthand the job he has ahead of him after Hertha fell to a fifth straight Bundesliga defeat.
