Lea Salonga not performing in SEA Games opening ceremonies

Filipina singer-actress Lea Salonga announced Monday that she will be unable to perform in the opening ceremonies of the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Saturday.

Salonga posted on Twitter that she will fly to Singapore to perform in the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street as Mrs. Lovett along with compatriot Jett Pangan.

The show will last from November 28 to December 8.

"Leaving on a jet plane for Singapore tomorrow and will begin our 14-show Sweeney run on Thursday night. This means I will not be performing at the SEA Games opening ceremonies on Saturday. I won't be back home til after Sweeney is done."

Despite the announcement, which caught many by surprise, Salonga was not part of the lineup announced last week by the organizers. Salonga had mentioned earlier in a press conference in September that she will not be able to take part in the festivities.

Salonga was chosen by National Artist Ryan Cayabyab to sing the SEA Games' official song, We Win As One.

Acts which will perform at the Philippine Arena include Lani Misalucha, Christian Bautista, Aicelle Santos, Jed Madela, Elmo Magalona, KZ Tandingan, Iñigo Pascual, the TNT Boys, Ana Fegi, Robert Seña, and apl.de.ap, among others.
