The Philippines ruled over Southeast Asian basketball anew as E-Gilas Pilipinas dominated Indonesia Sunday in the regional championship of the FIBA Esports Open.
The inside-outside combo of MVP Aljon 'Shintarou' Cruzin and Philippe 'Izzo' Herrero showed the way for the Filipinos who claimed a well-earned 44-36 Game 2 win after a gutsy Game 1 victory, 60-53.
The Finals sweep catapulted the Philippines back to the esports mountaintop after getting pushed off by Australia last year.
E-Gilas has now won two of the three regional championships of the FIBA Esports Open. According to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), this was just the culmination of all they have worked for in the past year.
"Congratulations to E-Gilas Pilipinas for once again winning the championship in the Southeast Asian region. After the last competition, the SBP saw how hungry E-Gilas was to reclaim the title. They worked hard on their game and have now regained their spot as the best in the region.," said president Al Panlilio in a statement.
"E-Gilas continues to be a source of pride and joy during these tough times as well as inspiration for individuals who wish to pursue a career in gaming."
Rounding out the Philippine team are players Clark Banzon, Custer Galas, Ian Santiago, and Arnie 'ElChapo' Sison as well as coach Nite Alparas and team manager Richard Brojan.
